About the Civil Engineering Department

The Department of Civil Engineering, accredited by NBA, was established in 2009 and offers B.Tech in Civil Engineering, M.Tech in Structural Engineering, M.Tech in Water Resources Engineering, and a Ph.D. program. The department is committed to quality education, research, and societal infrastructure development, with a vision to nurture skilled and innovative professionals who contribute to nation-building.

With a strong global alumni network, our graduates hold key positions in academia, industries, and government sectors. The department boasts state-of-the-art laboratories, including Material Testing, CAD & Geoinformatics, Geotechnical Engineering, Surveying, Geology, Environmental Engineering, and Fluid Mechanics Laboratories, along with a Model Museum.

Faculty expertise spans diverse specializations, fostering a dynamic research environment in Hydro-geology, Water Resources, Structural Engineering, Natural Hazards, Environmental Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, and Transportation Engineering. Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA) is a part of State Government and is a nodal institution for planning, co-ordination and monitoring for disaster prevention, mitigation, preparedness and management. SSDMA lays down policies on disaster management for the state. It approves disaster management plan in accordance to the guidelines laid down by National Authority and co-ordinates its implementation. It provides guidelines and reviews the measures being taken for mitigation, capacity building and preparedness by the Government and issue guidelines as necessary. SSDMA recommends provision of funds for mitigation and preparedness measures.

The Down to Earth 2019, 1st International Conference organised by the Department of Civil Engineering, Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology, focused on Water Security and Sustainability was a grand success. Participants from different parts of India and neighbouring countries took part in the conference. The conference was organised with the support of the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (Government of India).

The occasion was graced by the eminent speakers like Prof. Sharad Kumar Jain, Director, National Institute of Hydrology, Roorkee, Late Prof. Prashant Kumar Champatiray, Group Head, Geosciences and Disaster Management Studies Group, Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (ISRO), Dehradun, Prof. Suresh Chand Rai, University of Delhi and many others.

Participants from prestigious institutions like IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, AIIMS Delhi, BITS Pilani, NIT Silchar, IIEST Shibpur, Tribhuvan University (Nepal), Manipal Institute of Technology (MAHE), BIT Mersa, and Manipal University Jaipur participated in the conference and contributed papers. A total of 60 abstracts were received, of which 34 were shortlisted for presentation. Selected papers were published in Springer Lecture Notes in Civil Engineering (Scopus Indexed).

Selected papers will be considered for publication in Scopus-indexed “Lecture Notes in Civil Engineering (Springer)”.

Note : Selected papers from the conference will be published by Springer as a proceedings book volume. Springer will conduct quality checks on the accepted papers and only papers that pass these checks will be published.

Springer Nature does not charge any money for publication of Non-Open Access content. Abstracts/extended abstracts and short papers (less than 4 pages) are not considered for publication.
